Metal pollutants have additive negative effects on honey bee cognition

نویسندگان

چکیده

Environmental pollutants can exert sublethal deleterious effects on animals. These include disruption of cognitive functions underlying crucial behaviours. While agrochemicals have been identified as a major threat to pollinators, metal pollutants, which are often found in complex mixtures, so far overlooked. Here we assessed the impact acute exposure field-realistic concentrations three common lead, copper, arsenic, and their combinations, honey bee appetitive learning memory. All treatments involving single metals slowed down disrupted memory retrieval at 24 h. Combinations these had additive negative both processes, suggesting pathways toxicity. Our results highlight need further assess risks pollution invertebrates.

Honey Bee Swarm Cognition: Decision-Making Performance and Adaptation

A synthesis of findings from neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral biology has been recently used to show that several key features of cognition in neuron-based brains of vertebrates are also present in bee-based swarms of honey bees. Here, simulation tests are administered to the honey bee swarm cognition system to study its decision-making performance. First, tests are used to evaluate the...

Article history: Received: 12 Jul 2011 Accepted: 12 Mar 2011 Available online: 30 Dec 2012 ZJRMS 2013; 15(8): 1-5 Background: Bee venom (BV), like many other complementary medicines, has been used for thousands of years for the treatment of a range of diseases. More recently, BV is also being considered as an effective composition for the treatment of cancer. Cancer is a major worldwide proble...

Effects of cocaine on honey bee dance behaviour.

The role of cocaine as an addictive drug of abuse in human society is hard to reconcile with its ecological role as a natural insecticide and plant-protective compound, preventing herbivory of coca plants (Erythroxylum spp.). This paradox is often explained by proposing a fundamental difference in mammalian and invertebrate responses to cocaine, but here we show effects of cocaine on honey bees...

Modelling long-term effects of IGRs on honey bee colonies.

Systems have been developed to monitor the direct effects of insect growth regulator (IGR) pesticide exposure on honey bee development, but there has been little work on the longer-term impact of exposure on the colony. A honey bee population model provided the opportunity to investigate the effects of short-term mortality of brood and of sublethal changes in behaviour of the surviving adults o...

Effects of Insemination Quantity on Honey Bee Queen Physiology

Mating has profound effects on the physiology and behavior of female insects, and in honey bee (Apis mellifera) queens, these changes are permanent. Queens mate with multiple males during a brief period in their early adult lives, and shortly thereafter they initiate egg-laying. Furthermore, the pheromone profiles of mated queens differ from those of virgins, and these pheromones regulate many ...
